Designation: Senior Social Worker
Grade: SSWQ
Reports to: Team Manager
Directorate: Children and Young People
Section: Children’s and Young People’s Division

Main Purpose of the Job:
To provide an accountable statutory social work service to children, young people and their families/carers, including assessment, intervention, case planning and review, appropriate to the work of the team and service unit. As a supervising social worker, you will provide supervision, monitoring and development of foster carers in line with Fostering Regulations 2011.


Summary of Responsibilities and Personal Duties

  • Undertake all aspects of supervising social work on allocated cases or short-term cases.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure service users know their rights to access records and complain.
  • Produce case reports and correspondence for meetings, court, panels, agencies, and service users.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, guidance, and legislation.
  • Address needs of service users/carers from all communities, paying attention to equalities issues.
  • Participate in duty systems, including some out-of-hours.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with relevant agencies.
  • Input data using IT systems as required.
  • Take responsibility for safety, ensuring staff are not exposed to violence risks.
  • Attend and participate fully in supervision per departmental policy.

For Senior Social Workers Only:

  • Provide supervision to social workers, students, and/or social work assistants.
  • Undertake project work as appropriate.
  • Handle cases with complex risk levels.
  • Make day-to-day decisions on duty as appropriate.

Internal Contacts: Colleagues and managers within Children’s & Young People’s Division, Adult Care Services, Resources Division, and Strategy and Performance Division.
External Contacts: Other Council Directorates, Local Authorities, police, probation, health services, and the public.

Additional duties include:

  • Comply with Dignity at Work Policy and core values.
  • Participate in Performance Evaluation Scheme and training.
  • Comply with Health & Safety policies.
  • Assist with environmental policy implementation.
  • Undertake other duties as required.

Experience

  • Experience in assessment and planning for children and young people.
  • Demonstrable post-qualifying experience of at least two years working with children and families or expertise at a senior level.

Professional Qualifications

  • Good general education with literacy and numeracy.
  • Social Worker Degree or equivalent (original certificates required).
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.
  • Registration with Social Work England.

Personal Qualities

  • Self-motivated.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work alone.
  • Subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
