About Hackney

Our vision is to make Hackney a place for everyone. Where all our residents, whatever their background, have a chance to lead healthy and successful lives; a place of which everyone can be proud, with excellent services and public spaces, thriving businesses, and strong communities; a place that celebrates diversity, and where everyone can feel valued, included, and involved.

Hackney is a very diverse borough with 58% of the population of 0-19-year-olds coming from a Black African, Caribbean, Orthodox Jewish, Asian, Turkish or other Global Majority ethnic background. Hackney is also home to one the largest Haredi Jewish communities in Europe with approximately 20% of the children in the borough being from the Haredi community.

We are a small borough, with excellent transport links, making it easy to get around. There is no need for a car and many of our social workers are able to cycle or walk to their visits.

At Hackney Council, our staff values underpin everything we do. We are Inclusive, Pioneering, Proactive, Open, Ambitious and Proud.

Our Anti-Racist Practice Standards and support for staff to develop their active anti-racist practice is something we’re very proud of. Our 2022 Anti-Racist Praxis Conference has been nationally awarded by the Children and Young People Now Awards.

In the 2023 HMIP inspection of our Youth Justice service, we were applauded for our ‘powerful anti-racist stance’ and were awarded an overall rating of ‘Good’.

That pride we have in our profession, our approach, our staff, our children and families, and our communities is what makes us different. We are proud to be Hackney.
